5 to Follow: Nashville Coffee Shops

Whether it’s a daily stop on the way to work or the first place you go the morning after a long night out, your favorite coffee shop is a warm and cozy home-away-from-home. You can meet, greet and eat at most good coffee houses, but one thing that sets Nashville apart is the fact that our coffee shops serve food that eats like high end cuisine. From prosciutto and mozzarella sandwiches to lamb burgers with fig aioli, the culinary offerings in our coffee houses are strong enough to stand up to the joe.

And as anyone who is good and amped up on caffeine knows, you have to get chatty to stay in the conversation. Thus, Nashville coffee shops pump out a steady stream of information via social media to keep their clientele happy and engaged.

Let’s take a look at the 5 that do it best.

  • Fido. Arguably the best Bongo Java creation to date, Fido has been bringing breakfast to Hillsboro Village residents for years. And now they’re bring lunch and dinner, too. The Thai Triple Hot Fried Chicken is a surprising – and awesome – change of pace from the usual fare. They post all of their daily offerings using their blog‘s RSS feed, meaning they are socially active without having to dedicate many resources to social. Plus their coffee drinks are delicious and are all named after dogs. Only the heartless can withstand that charm.

  • The Frothy Monkey. Another shop that draws on a fuzzy animal for inspiration, The Frothy Monkey has quickly become one of 12 South’s hottest destinations. You can start with breakfast – most of which features Benton’s bacon – or end your day there with, well, breakfast. TFM serves an entirely different menu after 5 p.m., but it’s still technically breakfast, like Shrimp & Grits or Chicken & Waffles (actually made with a Cornish Game Hen). And it’s BYOB. No matter what is on the menu, the crew at the Monkey serves up serious personality alongside it by posting pictures that show what’s going on in their quirky little corner. Who wouldn’t want to get coffee from these fellas?

  • Portland Brew. A neighbor of the Frothy Monkey, Portland Brew keeps a pristine cafe on 12 South and at its East Nashville location. The menu isn’t expansive, but the offerings are all strong. We’d recommend the Salem, a sandwich featuring tomato, cheese and a spicy egg. It’s just the jolt you need in the morning. Portland Brew uses social media in the customary ways to publicize events, but they also give their followers discounts on “Secret Word Wednesdays.” And in our book, 25 percent off a coffee drink is a much safer type of secret society to join than, say, The Skulls, so take advantage.

  • CREMA. Crema makes use of all kinds of social, posting photos with Instagram and featuring their Twitter feed on the homepage of their website. And Crema follows rule #1 of social media: respond. When their customers comment, Crema lets them know they’ve been heard, and nothing keeps clientele coming back like a good listener. Oh, and great coffee. Their Beve offerings are unparalleled.

  • Barista Parlor. Another trendy offering from East Nashville, Barista Parlor serves up coffee that is matched in beauty only by its decor. This place is just downright cool. And the Parlor plays to those visual strengths by posting Instagram photos of the cool happening on Facebook and Twitter. For example, they sparked discussion with this fascinating piece of art, a piece that is comprised of 4000 Letterpress squares representing 42 different sea creatures. That’s some Monet-level skill.
