Betsy Hindman helps people engage their audiences, whether her clients are corporations, associations, nonprofits or individuals. She is a big picture thinker who can also get the details just right, so her clients get the best of both worlds.
Betsy’s Nashville roots are deep. She attended Vanderbilt University, graduating magna cum laude, and lives here in town with her husband of 24 years, Skip. She worked for Ingram Entertainment and Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, where she was chosen as a National Account Manager. She also led the training program for a nationwide video-store chain – Movie Gallery – as they were growing through acquisition.
Storytelling comes naturally to Betsy, who began her career working with the United Way and Salvation Army. With both agencies, she worked with CEOs and board members to help them tell compelling stories, and get individuals and companies to open their wallets. She learned a lot about both nonprofits and corporate boardrooms, knowledge which continues to serve her well today.
Q&A
Describe your office.
My office is wherever my clients are, so really my giant tote bag is my office. In it are my iPhone, my iPad and the black leather “Pirates of the Caribbean” portfolio from my years at Disney. It’s my favorite office item.
3 words that describe you best.
Adventurous. Collaborative. Optimistic.
What is your favorite place to visit?
My family’s remote cabin in the north woods of Minnesota. It’s rustic and beautiful. There is no electricity, no Wi-Fi and no indoor plumbing. Yes, you read that right.
If you have any job in the world, what would it be?
Cake tester. Wedding cakes, caramel cakes, coconut cakes…
What living person do you most admire?
My husband Skip. He is the best person I know. We met as undergrads at Vanderbilt and have been married 24 years. He recently took up playing the accordion, though, so I am starting to rethink my answer…
Whats you’re favorite book?
To be honest, I’m shamefully addicted to Twitter at the moment. I follow more than 1,000 people on everything that interests me, from education reform to Vandy sports to vintage jewelry. It often leads me to interesting blogs, articles and even the occasional hardback.
Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
“Do your homework.”
What was your greatest fear as a child?
I have an unnatural fear of cauliflower and cobras from spending my eighth grade year living in Egypt. My father was advising on agricultural policy in Alexandria. For some reason, we ate a lot of cauliflower. The cobras are a little more self-explanatory.
