Reality Gaming Gets Real
Sometimes art can imitate life. Take for example these photos taken for LIFE magazine. The images are impressive and the caption was: TALOQUAN, NORTHERN AFGHANISTAN – AUGUST 28, 2002: U.S. Army Special Forces soldier, nicknamed ‘Cowboy,’ and others secure an airstrip during an operation in the town of Taloquan in Northern Afghanistan. This LIFE magazine series of photos shot caught the eye and imagination of gamers, military enthusiasts and other online denizens. The images of the bearded “Cowboy” were posted and cross-posted in discussion groups across the internet picking up fans everywhere.
When the creators of the game, Medal of Honor, were looking for key art, they seized upon this iconic image.
The authenticity of “Cowboy” from his gear to the beard was confirmed by military experts. (Many special ops soldiers grew beards to better blend in with the locals.)
