The Pain of Traveling in Pictures

This morning, a very cheery newscaster informed me that today is the second busiest day of the year for flying. What better way to celebrate that with an infographic about flying!

For those of us over the age of 30, we can all remember pre-September 11th business travel. You could keep your shoes on through the screening process, you were allowed to carry on entire adult-sized bottles of liquid and there was real silverware available on the other side of security. Combine changes in security with increased fares and decreased customer service, and any glamor that ever existed in travel is long gone.

We all typically feel the pain of traveling when we fly. One artist, Colin Dunn, decided to see if there was a way to depict the current state of flying graphically.

Dunn, a Baltimore designer, pretty much captures the entire process of flying – from boarding to finding a seat to even using the lovely lavatory. He describes his final work as the result of “three data points: the stimulated sensory receptor, intensity of stimulation, and whether the sensation is positive or negative.” Dunn’s graphic helps you realized just how overstimulating the flying experience can be for many.
