If ever there was an outfit dedicated to the printed word, it’s the Nashville Public Library. But lest you think that the latest and best in non-print reading/listening technology is being kept at bay by zealous librarians bent on preserving the status quo, you’d be quite wrong.
A quick visit to www.library.nashville.org, shows that the library is determined to keep up with the times as much as technology and budgets will allow. Click on “Books, Movies & Music” and you’ll zip on over to a page offering multiple ways to check out — via download — audio books, eBooks and music.
Books are available via OverDrive and Netlibrary, while the music downloads are done via Freegal Music. Instruction guides and tours are available to walk you through the process, and all the system requirements (for Mac and PC) are spelled out as well. You can create wish lists, hold lists and more, so customize your experience as you see fit.
In addition to the convenience of being able to shop a rapidly growing database of literature and music, there’s another nifty little bonus to all this: no more late fees. Before, when you found that full set of “Harry Potter” in the trunk, under the still-unclean dry cleaning, it meant skulking up to the Returns desk and taking your lumps. Now, at the end of the loan period, the titles vanish from your device and find their cyber-way back to the library.
