Apple’s Subscription Service – Is it a Good Thing?

Apple recently announced its plan to tack a 30 percent fee on to publishers who charge subscriptions through its App Store. These fees apply to magazines, books, newspapers, music and videos. Apple is also dictating that these publishers can't offer their subscriptions elsewhere at a lower price, and the consumers will have the option to withhold to sharing their details — such as name or location — with the publisher.

An Online Magazine Success Story: Unum One

Our last Parthenon Post (our enewsletter) featured an article about how best to present print magazine content in a web format. Our basic take is this: "What readers want from a print magazine is not the same as what they want from a digital experience. People enjoy the portability and tactile experience that magazines offer. No matter how jazzy the user interface, digital editions cannot replicate the experience of consuming a physical magazine. And, while computer screens are getting larger and more brilliant, the basic design — “the user interface” — of a magazine feature story is not ideal for consumption via a computer screen." Basically, we are not huge fans of typical "digital editions" of magazines. But what if a client wants to produce an online magazine?

Worlds Largest News Stand: Magazines Online

In the world of print production technology, most magazines go to press in the form of a PDF document. On the web, that same PDF can be uploaded into an online template so the pages can be flipped and read online. One of the largest sites magazines are being uploaded onto is Issuu.com. Once uploaded into the Issuu site it can be read in their archive or the user can paste the magazine onto their own site.
