In February, Apple applied for a patent covering methods for the identifying and disabling of electronic devices. The patent titled “Systems and Methods for Identifying Unauthorized Users of an Electronic Device,” was published on Thursday and primarily focuses on measures to identify stolen devices and the protection of its sensitive information.
I know what you’re thinking “Great!!!” Well, I guess it would be great for most of us, except it also seems to cover methods for identifying hacked devices or those that have had their SIM cards removed. If Apple wanted to, they could use this information to delete everything from your iPhone or iPad and then shut down the services to your device — or even shut down the device itself.
I haven’t hacked into my iPhone, first because I’m a chicken, and second, I’m the type that would swiftly destroy my phone immediately after voiding the warranty. If I had though, this news would make me a little nervous. Sure, the government has authorized the jailbreaking of these devices by their owners, but I guess if Apple wants to gain even more control over your devices, they can and will.
