Web Design for Small Businesses in 2011

Now that it’s 2011, all of the “top trends of 2011″ lists are coming out. A noteworthy one I stumbled upon today is Mashable’s Five Design Trends for Small Businesses. What’s great about what we see coming up in 2011 is that many of these trends won’t require any more out-of-pocket expenses to implement. They create a lot of bang with very few bucks, possibly even saving you some money, which is crucial to a small business. Here’s what you should see come our way in 2011:

1. Lose the Flash. Flash is expensive and can actually push a user away from your site if their computer or device doesn’t support it. If it’s not necessary for a specific interactive experience, there’s no need for it.

2. Web Fonts. Web fonts are no longer constrained to the small selection from a few years ago. There are free solutions for designers to create more effective and attractive typography on your site conveying your company’s message more effectively.

3. Mobile Optimized Sites. There are so many mobile devices out there, your site is bound to be viewed by one. Make it count and make your site more effective by optimizing it for smaller screens.

4. Tumblr-Inspired. The Tumblr platform often inspires site design through it’s content sharing, effective typography and minimalist layout.

5. HTML5 and CSS3. The latest versions of Web browsers now support HTML5 and CSS3. We’re living the future!

So, what other trends do you predict small businesses will be moving toward in 2011?
