Zynga Inspires Hasbro

Zynga LogoNeed more proof of the mainstreaming of social media? Traditional gamemaker Hasbro and Facebook time-waster Zynga have come together to develop a line of games and toys based on some of Zynga’s characters and social gaming brands. Some of Zynga’s most popular games include FarmVille, CityVille and Words With Friends. Old school Hasbro’s characterization of “games” has long been associated with 80s board games, so this might mean a new definition of things to come for Hasbro.

Mark Pincus, founder, CEO and chief product officer of Zynga says, “This partnership is so special because it represents an exciting leap forward in enabling people to connect their virtual and real worlds. Hasbro has inspired play through their famous toys, games and action figures and we look forward to working with a company that continually creates meaningful and fun brands.”

Nobody would deny that Hasbro’s Scrabble board game is the template for Zynga’s Words With Friends. And that Scrabble owes much to longtime pencil-and-paper standard, the crossword puzzle. Now the spark of creativity is coming from the virtual world.

The new line of toys will be arriving on the shelves in the fall and you can go to Zynga’s beta site now and check out a few of the games they have to offer online. Who knows you might be seeing a new line of Hasbro Scrabble II board games that are inspired by Words With Friends…wouldn’t that be ironic?
